CB2 Opens in San Francisco

This city is certainly not lacking modern design stores. Thankfully, however, CB2 decided to give it a shot and try its hand at competing here. I’ve liked their online wares for quite a while now, so I definitely looked forward to finally getting to check them out in person. Unlike its sibling Crate and Barrel where everything is boring and brown, CB2 livens things up with bright oranges, greens and yellows. At times the decor is a bit too punchy for my taste, but I am in full appreciation of a mass retailer bringing affordable modern goods to market.

We headed over to their new store near Union Square (Stockton and Ellis) to see what they had to offer. Since we’re still looking for a rug to replace the IKEA filler we have in our living room, we were immediately taken by this nice orange floral starburst design. The rugs are of the quality you’d expect for a $300 5′x8′, but for our budget we think it will work out nicely.

They also had a very nice series of Japanese style end tables, covered in bright glossy veneers. These came in various bright colors (as does most everything in the store), but I was taken by this display of a great yellow console and matching lamps. I love the use of simple white containers on top.

They also had some nice, more subtle looking pieces, such as the Lanai dining table. Unfortunately the floor sample displayed some fairly poor construction, as the individual table slats were a bit off level and unevenly stained. However, for its price point the table has a really nice presence and feel. I could just see a family sitting there for a delicious evening meal.
Lastly I was really taken by the idea of wrapping a console table around the entirety of a couch, especially with the high contrast pulled off in this display. Not only does it give you a huge amount of storage and room for lighting, but it easily allows the sofa to sit in the middle of a room rather than playing its usual role of wallflower.
CB2, I’m happy you’re finally in our city. I look forward to my return.

I subscribe to their catalog and I also was taken with the console table around the sofa. Maybe someday when Mike and I have more space than we currently do. (And more $) Congrats on your new buys!
