Beautifully Hip Noe Valley Renovation

April 23rd, 2009 · 2 Comments

Randomly reading the New York Times this morning I ran across this article about a young couple and their hip Noe Valley renovation.  Jay Shapiro, a skateboarder and bassist for local band Space Vacation, and Claire Bigbie, interior designer and RISD graduate, have totally transformed this Victorian space into a perfect home for SF youngsters.

They purchased the home for $1 million in 2005, and the renovation reportedly cost around $500,000.  Apparently Claire has been collecting furniture since she was 14, something I obviously should have been doing instead of playing video games.  Her tastes in design definitely give these rooms a unique and hip character.  It’s rare that I like wallpaper, but this room does it right.

According to the article, Jay wanted the bathroom to represent an empty pool, complete with depth markings and concrete coping for shelves.  Never before have I seen such a cheeky homage executed so well and with such an awesome aesthetic.  I love how the tile curves down from the wall and spills onto the floor, just like a real pool.  I want to wake up to this!

The kitchen is done in a surprisingly neutral palette compared to the rest of the home, but I think letting the natural colors of the woods shine was the right choice.  I’m definitely a big fan of kitchens without too much overhead storage that instead keep things open and airy.  Look at all of that nautral light!  I love their hanging exposed lightbulb fixtures too.

Most of all, I’m smitten with their living room that flows out into the back yard.  There are definitely some perks that come with having a ground floor unit in the city.  Their use of color is so playful and cozy, yet uncluttered.  I think I need to make some new friends in the neighborhood.

Read the whole article and see the slideshow over at the New York Times.

Tim – your writing is so descriptive! I love reading your postings. I can imagine you and Faye living in a house like this one! What a wonderful idea – having an entrance to the living room that opens the entire wall to the outdoors.
