LEGO Mania!

Like many kids, especially those who grew up to become engineers, LEGO blocks were a huge source of fun and inspiration for me.  In fact, I’ve never really stopped loving them, though I haven’t built or purchased any in a long time.  That’s all about to change.

I nearly jumped out of my chair while reading Dinosaurs & Robots this morning when I discovered LEGO is launching a new series called Architecture.  These kits will allow you to build famous masterpieces out of LEGO blocks, starting with a collection based on the work of Frank Lloyd Wright.  Also in the series are the John Hancock Building and Sears Tower in Chicago, and the Empire State Building in New York.  I cannot wait to get my hands on these.  Maybe through constructing the building I can get a sense of the music of architecture, feel the notes and see the building through the eyes of the designer.

The LEGO site claims the line is coming soon, but it looks like you can get some already at the Chicago Architecture Foundation shop.  Just search for “lego”.

My excited doubled when, while running errands tonight, I stumbled across a local LEGO store.  Most of the shelves were devoted to Star Wars and other movie merchandise, but hidden in the back corner were LEGO home goods!  Salt and pepper shakers, egg timers, ice trays that form blocks.  However, the piece I simply could not walk away from was this awesome minifig ceramic cookie jar.  This is now the coolest item in our kitchen.

You can get your home goods at the LEGO online store.
