Here’s a wonderfully cute critical analysis of couch cushion forts collected from around the internet:

A brilliant synergy between the weighted foundation and the light tensile structure, this project impressed us with its attenuation of structure and bright interior spaces. The courtyard and formal entry are also well thought-out and provide a clear means of way-finding. Grade A+

Eames House Blocks

It’s true. I’m an Eames fanboy. The couple and their productions were revolutionary in their approach to life and design, and their Case Study No. 8 house is no exception. Now, House Industries (of typography fame) has produced a set of children’s blocks that puts that wonderful piece of architecture in your hands. Screen printed by hand on basswood, these blocks are exactly the kind of toys I love.

Marquis Estate of Cherry Creek

I’ve always loved the mountains. Although I grew up near the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia, for me nothing quite compares to the Rockies. Ever since we drove across the country to California I have looked forward to going back to Colorado. Now if I could just pony up $5,659,000, I could live there in style.

Designed by Site 7 Solutions, this giant of a house in Denver features 7,066 square feet of living space, including an indoor saltwater pool and spa, home theater, wine room, offices with a library mezzanine and a courtyard, all bathed in natural light and crafted using exotic woods. While I can’t say this is an exercise in sustainable design, I’d sure like to move in.

Modern Cottage in Sebastopol

I’ve always dreamed of owning a wood cottage in the mountains. Designed by Turnbull Griffin Haesloop Architects, this modern home in Sebastopol, California (just north of SF) is exactly what I had in mind. At 1700 square feet, it has just enough room to cozily vacation with your family while comfortably absorbing the breathtaking landscape and redwood trees. The uniformity and structure of the front of the home is balanced nicely by the natural grace of the materials used, including a cedar roof, Douglas fir ceiling and ipe wood floors. Sign me up!

Even though I’m partial to modern work, I can’t help but enjoy classic Greek architecture. These Corinthian column bookends are a perfect way to show your own appreciation for timeless beauty. Hand-casted in plaster and hand-finished in England, available from the Monticello museum store.

Houses I Love: 112 Laidley Street

I live a few blocks from this house and it is by far my favorite in the neighborhood. Designed in 2002 by LSArc, it captures the spirit of San Francisco architecture while also exploring modern minimalism and serenity. I love the combination of public, panoramic views in the front with a Japanese garden and private courtyard in the rear. If I could buy any house in San Francisco, it would be this one.

Check out this video of NuFormer Digital Media‘s new 3D building projection technology. They can map video onto the surface of any building without constructing new architecture or any significant exterior impact. My mind is officially blown.

Autumn in Virginia

We had the fortune of traveling east during the prime of autumn a few weeks ago, and naturally a visit to Charlottesville, Virginia and Monticello was high on my list. The camera captured just a glimpse of why I miss the East Coast. I can’t wait to move back.
